ABOUT THE UNIT:

UChicago STEM Education is a center devoted to research and development that resides within the Physical Sciences Division (PSD) of the University of Chicago. Formerly the Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education, UChicago STEM Education continues the University of Chicago’s long-standing commitment to improving precollege education and aims to support high quality mathematics and science instruction and learning for all students. Through the sharing of knowledge and the creation of useful products and programs, UChicago STEM Education seeks to make a positive difference for mathematics and science instruction throughout the nation.

UChicago STEM Education’s work comprises two components: (1) Tool Development and (2) School Support Services. Separately, each of these components is a necessary part of improving mathematics and science education. Within UChicago STEM Education, they inform one another and constitute a rigorous, comprehensive approach to supporting high quality education.

UChicago Financial Education Initiative seeks to empower all individuals to navigate the financial system with confidence, make informed and reasoned financial decisions throughout their lives, and realize long-term financial well-being. The Initiative was launched in July 2016 to develop the tools, resources, and capacity to spread robust financial education across the country. This includes the development and publication of finEDge, a research-based, semester-long high school financial education course and Talking Cents, conversation cards designed to break the taboo of talking about money by facilitating casual conversation between families and friends. The Initiative is regularly invited to conferences and educational events to share their unique approach to financial education.

This is a face-paced and innovative team that is developing a world-class elementary financial literacy curriculum for students in Hong Kong, focusing on content, assessment, and differentiation.
